Battlefield 6 is set to ditch a major feature when it launches in October, but it sounds like it might be for the best.

Battlefield 6 looks like it’ll be a huge return to form for the series, and beta players have liked what they’ve seen so far.

Still, in order to appeal to as many people as possible, the game needs to look gorgeous without hitting too hard in the performance department. Having your experience look absolutely beautiful isn’t worth it if it regularly slows down to 15FPS.

It seems as though Electronic Arts has managed to find a decent middle ground, however. In the wake of the final PC system requirements being revealed, a major graphical feature is being skipped for this release.

Battlefield 6 won’t have ray-tracing or path tracing at launch, and it sounds like there won’t be any plans to change that in the future.

Speaking to Comic Book, Technical Director Christian Buhl spoke about the reason for skipping ray-tracing, which was a feature in Battlefield 2042 and Battlefield V.

“No, we are not going to have ray-tracing when the game launches and we don’t have any plans in the near future for it either,” Buhl said.

“That was because we wanted to focus on performance. We wanted to make sure that all of our effort was focused on making the game as [optimized] as possible for the default settings and the default users. So, we just made the decision relatively early on that we just weren’t going to do ray-tracing and again, it was mostly so that we could focus on making sure it was performance for everyone else.”

From what I played of the beta, I can confidently say that Battlefield 6 definitely doesn’t need these additional graphics effects.

Sure, ray-tracing makes everything look really nice, but it isn’t worth the performance hit in most cases.

And considering it’s a competitive multiplayer shooter, a lot more people are going to be concerned about getting a smooth experience than being able to see a few more details in the environment.

Battlefield 6 launches on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on 10th October, 2025.
