Assassin's Creed Red sounds badass!

The Assassin’s Creed series is one of Ubisoft’s most popular franchises with a release arriving on a nearly yearly basis since its inception in 2007.

This year, 2023, will be no exception with the arrival of Assassin’s Creed Mirage having fans of the series excited at the prospect of going back to the series' roots with an emphasis on stealth - something that has been somewhat lost during the RPG era.

What comes next after Assassin’s Creed Mirage? Well, firstly, Ubisoft intends to release the quite impressive-looking mobile game Assassin’s Creed Jade set in ancient China, which is currently in its closed beta phase. After that, it looks like Assassin’s Creed Red will be the next big entry.

At this time, we know little about Assassin’s Creed Red, other than it will be developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the fact that it’s set in Feudal Japan, and Red is its codename. An ancient Japanese setting is a location that fans of the series have been wanting for years which will no doubt result in this being one of Ubisoft’s most highly anticipated games in recent times.

However, recent details have emerged from industry insider Tom Henderson. As reported on Insider Gaming, Assassin’s Creed Red will not only continue with an emphasis on stealth gameplay, but it will also feature destructible environments. To a certain degree, the Assassin’s Creed series has always featured destructible objects, but nothing really on a massive scale.

Henderson claims that in Assassin’s Creed Red, players will be able to “break anything that you could expect to break in real life with the tools they have. Screen doors for example can be slashed and broken open.” He continues: “Whilst this isn’t a Battlefield-esque type of environmental destruction, it adds yet another layer to Assassin’s Creed Red that players will enjoy.”

What’s more, Henderson also reports that Assassin’s Creed Red will not only have a proper reveal sometime during early 2024 but it will also be released late that year, which would certainly suit Ubisoft’s frequent Assassin’s Creed release schedule.

Being set in Feudal Japan, Assassin’s Creed Red will have two playable protagonists, perhaps taking inspiration from 2015’s AC Syndicate. The two playable characters are said to be a Samurai (male) and a Shinobi (female). Moreover, as we previously learned, the Samurai character is reportedly of African origin named Yasuka, believed to be the first African Samurai during the late 1500s. Assassin’s Creed Red is also expected to be the last of the RPG-inspired entries. As for the stealth gameplay, it’s claimed that AC Red will be borrowing elements from Ubisoft’s other series, Splinter Cell.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage has a release date of 5 October 2023. Assassin’s Creed Red is set to be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
