Assassin's Creed Red will be the last RPG entry, says insider

Could the era of the Assassin's Creed RPG be coming to an end?

Some could argue that Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series has lost its way in recent years despite its quality.

While not perfect with its somewhat clunky gameplay and stealth mechanics that were far behind the likes of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell, when the first Assassin’s Creed was released in 2007, its potential was quite clear.

Check out the Assassin's Creed Mirage story trailer below!

By the time the second game arrived, starring the endlessly charismatic Ezio Auditore, the series was in a much better way and over the years that followed, Ubisoft honed in on fans living the fantasy assassin life.

However, with the arrival of Assassin’s Creed Origins in 2017, despite ultimately being a stealth game, it leaned heavily into the RPG genre with an open world and approach to missions as well as its XP and skill tree systems. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the series post-2017, but it is a far cry from what it once was.

So when Assassin’s Creed Mirage was officially announced in September 2022 and promised to take the series back to its roots, veteran fans were bursting with excitement. Yet, that’s not to say that we won't see the end of the RPG era, but it still might be coming to an end soon, that’s at least according to an industry insider.

In a post shared on Reddit by BrunoHM, a known insider and ResetEra forum member, John Harker claims that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Red which is set in Feudal Japan, will be the last of the RPG-inspired games.

Responding to a thread discussing Assassin’s Creed Red rumours, Harker simply replied “RED will be the last of the Origins formula.” There were no further details on that response in terms of where the information came from so it should be taken with a pinch of salt. That being said, it’s also not a far-fetched suggestion. What’s more, offering some substance to the credentials of Harker, the Redditor sharing the post mentions that the insider was apparently aware of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey before its launch in 2018.

In related news, another rumour claims that the release of Assassin’s Creed Red could be much closer than initially believed and fans are calling for a Cold War-era-inspired spy game.

At this time, there is no release date for Assassin’s Creed Red, but it is believed to launch sometime in 2024. For the immediate future, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox on 12 October 2023.
