Assassin's Creed: Cold War-era spy game is the perfect setting, fans agree

Fans are hot for a Cold War Assassin's Creed game!

Assassin’s Creed is arguably Ubisoft's most valuable property and since its inception in 2007, fans have immersed themselves by living the fantasy of being an assassin.

That being said, with the Assassin’s Creed series being 16 years old at the time of writing with nearly countless releases, it would be understandable if fans felt that the formula was getting a little stale.

Over the years, we’ve gone from pure stealth assassination, to open-world shenanigans, heavy inspirations from the RPG genre, right back to stealth with the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Take a look at the trailer for Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia below!

Assassin’s Creed Mirage releases later this year, after that, we know that the mobile game Assassin’s Creed Jade is on the way, followed by Assassin’s Creed: Red set in Feudal Japan, the latter of which, we’re yet to see any gameplay. As for what the future of the series holds after that, remains to be seen. However, fans are calling for Bayek from Origins to star in his second game.

Another game that fans are calling for is a Cold War-era spy game and some fans believe it will make for a perfect Assassin’s Creed entry, and we agree. “Imagine a spy-themed Assassin's Creed based in Berlin during the Cold War,” said Redditor Agoodsir042, opening up the discussion on the thread.

“I was in Germany last month and spent some time in Berlin. And all I could think is how great a game set in Cold War Berlin would be,” they said in a lengthy post. “As I begin to discuss my idea of what the game could be, try to imagine a game similar to the older AC games, with some elements of Splinter Cell and Watch Dogs Legion.”

They continued: “The setting is perfect for the struggle between the Assassins and Templars. Templars are all about control so they would obviously dig the East German (USSR) side and the assassins would be fighting the regime by trying to sneak people across the Berlin Wall to the freedom of the West.”

“That sounds awesome,” said a joyous YoBoBaLow. “I would LOVE this. I’m completely obsessed with the Cold War.” agreed YourSkatingHobbit. “This is the best idea I've heard in a long time. It wouldn't just have to be within Berlin, either,” suggested a Reddit user. “Could also feature a few other cities of importance in the Cold War, like Warsaw, Moscow, Kyiv, and London. Really unique and interesting, yet dismal and atmospheric architecture.”

The concept of an Assassin’s Creed game set during the Cold War would certainly make for an intriguing prospect. Furthermore, as users in the thread mentioned, we also played a little bit of spy espionage during the WWI section of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Plus, we know that Ubisoft loves reusing assets, so some inspiration could also be taken from the likes of Splinter Cell and Watch Dogs.

In 2016, we were treated to the spin-off Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia which was set during the early 1900s. So, who knows, when Ubisoft eventually runs out of ideas, perhaps this might be a future avenue that could be explored in the series. As for the immediate future, Assassin’s Creed Mirage releases on 12 October 2023 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
