The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage was announced today at Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Showcase. The new title will star Basim, of Valhalla fame, and will see a return to the franchise’s stealth gameplay, much to the delight of many fans.

Set in 9th Century Baghdad, Mirage will follow Basim from a lowly street orphan all the way up to a master assassin. Training under Roshan, a veteran assassin (played by Shohreh Aghdashloo), players will be thrust into a familiar world but with some new features.

Parkour has been sped up, and will be vital to getting around the rooftops of this new sandbox, with level design adapted to provide lots of opportunities to run, jump and even hide among the scenery. Ubisoft explained this is part of their “modern take on gameplay.”

One particularly interesting looking new feature is the ‘Assassin’s Focus’, a skill which slows down time - à la bullet time - letting players perform multiple actions in sequence, such as takedowns. Already I can see myself using this feature at every turn because it looks so slick and satisfying.

New weapons have also been added, namely a mine and a blowpipe, bringing new ways of dealing with targets while keeping to the stealth of Mirage. Additionally, enemies have a new weapon in the form of an arrow that can take out your eagle assistant, so be mindful of that when doing recon.

Perhaps most impressive from the reveal is the world of Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Set in 9th Century Baghdad, a cityscape that was almost entirely lost in the 14th Century, Mirage looks set to offer up a gorgeous, intricately-designed play area for players to explore with Basim.

While no official release date has been confirmed yet, Ubisoft have said Assassin’s Creed Mirage will launch at some point in 2023, and will come to PC, Amazon Luna, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
