Xbox owners were treated to a free game a few weeks away due to an unexpected store error, and now you can finally claim what’s rightfully yours.
Everybody loves a free video game but sometimes that surprise freebie wasn’t actually meant for you to claim.
Xbox might have been on a roll recently with changes to Xbox Game Pass and promises for the future but it’s still prone to the odd mistake, and that’s exactly what happened when the Xbox Store accidentally made a Fallout-like RPG free for a limited time.
Anyone who claimed the freebie will have likely been disappointed to see the game wouldn’t actually work, but now the developers have stepped in to give gamers what they want.
The Fallout series has come a long way and when you’re asked to think Bethesda’s highly-successful you’d probably think about Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4 or Fallout 3 before anything else. The 3D games basically.

However Fallout started out as a 2D trimetric game series and that’s exactly the kind of feel Wasteland Remastered tries to emulate whilst also having its own identity. It’s an updated version of the original with enhanced graphics and sound.
In error the game was made free on the Xbox Store but rather than rip away digital copies that were wrongfully claimed and downloaded the developer/publisher inXile entertainment is rewarding players instead.
A recent post on X from inXile entertainment reads: “A couple weeks ago an error made Wasteland Remastered free on the Microsoft/Xbox Store, but what people snagged before we fixed the glitch can’t actually be played. So, we’re giving them one that can.
“If you were lucky enough to redeem it, you’ll soon see the (non-working) game removed from your library, and you’ll have a new copy to claim waiting for you in your Offers & Credits. Hope you enjoy and see you in the Wasteland.”
So the freebie that was never meant to be a freebie has become one anyway, but only if you took advantage of the offer as it was happening.
Wasteland Remastered won’t be everyone’s cup of tea mind you as while it looks prettier the gameplay of the original is left intact, and obviously RPGs have moved on since then.
If you’re going in expecting another Baldur’s Gate 3 you’re playing the wrong game, but it’s still worth a go nonetheless.
Wasteland Remastered hasn’t been the only freebie landing on gamers’ laps. Xbox has been handing out free store credit vouchers, some at random, some with a check-list.
Some users reported $5 vouchers materialising in their inbox for use during the Spring sale period whereas others are tied to specific game releases.
Those who preorder Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced can claim a $5 voucher with no strings attached, and a more recent offer will net you another $5 voucher for playing a Call of Duty game.
