'Wii Sports' Is Finally Getting A Sequel On Nintendo Switch

I’ll be honest, going into last night’s Nintendo Direct, the last thing I was expecting was a sequel to Wii Sports. I think I, along with the rest of the internet, was looking for quite a different sequel - namely one that’s got a little more Zelda in it, but I’ve got to say I am not complaining about this in the slightest.

As you’d expect, it’s not actually called Wii Sports anymore - it’s been appropriately rebranded to Nintendo Switch Sports, and it’s releasing right around the corner on 29 April. As well as that classic, chill soundtrack, and fan favourite returning sports, there’s also going to be some brand new additions to the series included as well.

Making a triumphant return from the original game are Tennis and Bowling, with Chambara (sword fighting) also making a comeback from Wii Sports Resort. The newly added sports are Badminton, Volleyball, and Footb-, sorry, Soccer. Also, yes, Miis are in this game too. 

It’s also been confirmed that Golf will be added to the game in a free update in autumn, which honestly seems like a really long way away just for one extra mode, especially when you consider the whole game is releasing in just over two months. Maybe we could be seeing some other mystery sports added in the update at the same time? See, now that all the fighters have been revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, all the speculation can go towards this instead.

While the classic image of Wii Sports is having high-stakes bowling tournaments with your friends in your living room, online play is going to be a (very welcome) addition this time around, too. Speaking of which, if you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you’ll be able to get a taster of the game ahead of release - an online play test is going ahead between 18-20 February, featuring Bowling, Tennis and Chambara. During this time, you’ll only be able to play against random players though, not friends. Booo. Oh well, it’ll still be fun. Also, please be careful not to throw your Joy-Con at the TV this time.
