Last night’s Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live event gave Resident Evil fans what they had been waiting for: a first look at some gameplay from Resident Evil Requiem.
However, it was during this trailer that one of Resident Evil’s most iconic characters was unceremoniously killed off in order to make way for the next generation.
Set to be released in February 2025, Resident Evil Requiem will be the ninth instalment in Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise and will star a brand-new protagonist known as FBI agent Grace Ashcroft who is tasked with investigating a series of mysterious deaths at a local hospital.
First revealed with a teaser trailer during the Summer Game Fest this June, we saw our first look at Grace Ashcroft and many fans of the Resident Evil franchise soon realised that she bore a striking resemblance to another beloved character (well, the second name being the same also helped).

That’s right, Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft who appeared in Resident Evil Outbreak, Resident Evil Outbreak File #2, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
As an investigative reporter for The Raccoon Press, she is among the few to actually escape Raccoon City and it seems that after this event, she gave birth to a daughter.
For the first time in many years, we finally got a glimpse of an older Alyssa in last night’s gameplay trailer for Resident Evil Requiem.
The trailer gave us a peek at some of the horrors we can expect from the next entry as Alyssa and her daughter Grace attempt to escape before being apprehended by a mysterious figure who kills a man right in front of them.

The pair manage to get away and embrace, with Alyssa telling Grace that she will explain everything one day but to always remember that “you are my hope”.
Just as they turn to reach the exit, Alyssa is seemingly killed off-screen with a horrified Grace screaming at the sight.
Did Capcom really just kill off Alyssa Ashcroft or have we just been made to think that?
Well, it seems that we will find out when Resident Evil Requiem launches on 26 February for PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam).
