The wider Star Wars lore has expanded significantly since the early days of the original trilogy of films and we know a lot more about the biggest characters in the series today than we ever have before.
From their veiled and mysterious origins to what they did after the films finished, there are books, comics, TV shows and more deliberately designed to expand on the characters and their fates in a galaxy racked with conflict.
Equally, those responsible for narrative direction in Disney's flagship new Star Wars shows have added their two cents to proceedings, including Andor creator Tony Gilroy.
As confirmed over on Twitter/X by Star Wars Holocron, Gilroy has detailed that Emperor Palpatine's iconic black robe is actually made from Ghorman twill, a material highly coveted across the galaxy far, far away.

Gilroy revealed the news in a blog post on the official Star Wars website, detailing how they created the worlds of Andor, including Ghorman where the silk is produced.
The twill comes from unique creatures known as Ghorlectipods, essentially big blue spiders, with more than 40 billion of them operating in farms on the planet to get as much silk made as possible.
The material itself doesn't seem to have any particularly spectacular properties, other than being very fine to wear and hold. As such, it became an extremely expensive textile used by only the most powerful and wealthy.
Aside from Palpatine, the only example we have of its use is when Axel Greylark, son of Supreme Chancellor Kyong Greylark of the Galactic Republic, wore a blue suit made of Ghorman twill for his wedding day.

With Ghorman now starting to feature more heavily in Star Wars properties, we might get some more info on the silk and exactly why it's so appreciated by Palpatine and the galaxy's rich and powerful.
