The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake final build dropped online for free

Work on the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Unreal Engine 5 remake has officially ceased, with the final version now playable for free.

Later this year, fans will welcome the official Ocarina of Time remake for the Nintendo Switch 2, and that first-look we got during the last Nintendo Direct drew many comparisons with the Unreal Engine 5 remake from CryZENx.

CryZENx has been working on the remake for an entire decade, but recently announced that they’d be ending development on it indefinitely.

It was sad to hear, but those 10 years have dazzled gamers with gorgeous visuals, and a taste of what we might get in the Nintendo Switch 2 version.

As a send-off for the project the final build has been released as a free download for anyone interested.

“The end of an era,” said CryZENx in their farewell post. “Well, the day is officially here. It feels incredibly surreal to write this, but this is the final post for Ocarina of Time Project … When I dropped my very first project, I honestly didn't think anyone would notice. I never expected a community like this to build around my work.

“Every single hour I've spent rendering, debugging code, and tweaking designs late into the night—it was all fuelled by your energy, your feedback, and your shared hype for these worlds. Strip away your support, and none of this exists. Period.”

CryZENx went on to say, “I can't just leave without giving you guys one last, definitive piece of my work to take with you,” before unlocking the final build for all of their supporters.

Players will get to explore all of the areas CryZENx has worked on up to now, which amounts to over five hours of gameplay.

Even the 60fps mode has been unlocked for all players. Previously, the feature was locked behind a Patreon subscription, but since development is ending, it’s been made available for everyone as a goodwill gesture.

It truly is the end of an era, but it’s understandable why it had to come to an end. For starters, it was a lot of work for a solo developer to take on, and while CryZENx clearly appreciated the support it must have started to take its toll eventually.

There’s also the elephant in the room. Nintendo is releasing that official remake of the game, so if work on the Unreal Engine 5 version continued, it probably wouldn’t be long before the company sends a cease-and-desist letter the project’s way.

What we know about the Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo plans to release the game later this year, but no exact date has been set as of yet.

In terms of pricing, it’s believed physical versions will cost around $60 which actually has some fans worried that it won’t be a substantial remake.

There was even a rumour that it’d be split into two separate games. One would focus on Young Link’s journey whereas the other would focus on Adult Link.

It’s very hard to judge. The brief snippet we were shown at the Nintendo Direct gave little away. It was just a clip of Link sleeping in Kakariko Forest, while the Triforce of Courage glowed on his hand, which was especially interesting to fans as he wouldn’t have the Triforce of Courage by that point in the story.

We’ll just have to wait and see. Another Nintendo Direct could be on the way, and with Gamescom 2026 rapidly approaching, we may hear more about the game then.
