One talented The Legend of Zelda fan is ending development on their high profile Unreal Engine 5 remake of Ocarina of Time following Nintendo’s reveal of the real deal.

Earlier this month, Nintendo confirmed that a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be landing sometime this year.

The game’s very brief teaser didn’t go down all that well.

The cinematic briefly showed a glimpse of Link asleep, but that’s not a lot considering the game will supposedly be launching in the next six months.

This remake was always going to be under heavy scrutiny; after all, the original Ocarina of Time boasts a score of 99 on Metacritic.

How do you even go about remaking near perfection? Is Ocarina of Time’s nostalgic charm a part of its magic now?

An unfortunate result of the official remake is that YouTuber CryZENx is ceasing development on their own version.

Created in Unreal Engine 5, CryZENx’s project has set the internet ablaze in recent years.

Every few months, the creator has shared another small portion of their Ocarina of Time remake with the latest arriving in late May. It focused on the ‘Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly’ level.

CryZENx next planned to tackle recreating the Barinade boss fight.

The Ocarina of Time UE5 Remake Has Been In The Works For Over 4 Years

The creator first dropped a glimpse of the remake project four years ago having already been working on a remake of Ocarina of Time in Unreal Engine 4 before that.

It’s important to note that it’s CryZENx’s own decision to end development. It’s easy to assume that Nintendo might have shut the whole thing down.

“I would like to tell you that Ocarina of Time Project is officially stopped,” said the creator on Patreon.

In an additional post on YouTube, they added, “Time to switch to a new project soon to not step on their way,” in response to Nintendo’s official remake.

Given the now-confirmed art direction of the official Ocarina of Time remake, many Zelda fans have remarked how similar it actually is to CryZENx’s take.

It’s a shame that the full fan project will never see the light of day but gamers have shown CryZENx their thanks and support.

“Man, I enjoyed your Zelda stuff over the years. I can remember I was just a teenager. Can’t wait to see what you do next,” read one YouTube comment.

“That makes me sad to hear man. I’ve been following this project since I was a kid and I’ll be 23 this year,” added another.

“Dude, your project is the first thing me and a lot of us thought of when we saw the announcement. Thanks for doing what you do and knowing the importance that story had for so many of us,” declared someone else.

If you’re not familiar with CryZENx’s remake efforts, many of the portions of the game he’s made are available to download and play.

Of course, do remember that they’ve been made by just one individual so you may encounter the odd hiccup.

CryZENx appears to be leaving all pre-existing remake instalments live. It’s more the case that no more will be added from this moment on.

The question now becomes: what will CryZenX begin remaking next?
