Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Gets Unreal Engine 5 Remake

And you can play it for yourself for free!

If you’ve ever wondered what The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time might look like if it were developed in 2025, as opposed to in the mid 90s, then I have some great news for you.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the all-time greats for a reason, and, personally, I think it’s survived the test of time due to how well its graphics have aged.

Sure, by modern standards it’s not particularly impressive, but the limitations set on Nintendo’s developers back in the Nintendo 64 era resulted in a library of games that focused on bright, distinctive colour palettes over graphical fidelity.

That isn’t to say that what they were able to produce back then wasn’t considered cutting edge, but rather that the modern focus on having everything look shiny and 4K has arguably resulted in a lot of modern games looking somewhat… samey.

Well, if you fancy seeing what Nintendo could have been capable of making using the power of Unreal Engine 5 instead, then technical wizard Taylor S. Ellis has offered us a glimpse into what a future remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time might look like.

And, even better still, you can try it out for yourself for free.

As detailed in an article by Dark Side of Gaming, Taylor S. Ellis has faithfully recreated Kakariko Village in Unreal Engine 5 by transferring the game’s assets into “.obj form” and then remaking all of said assets by themselves.

As Ellis states in their video, which you can watch for yourself here, this was done to (hopefully) stop Nintendo from taking down their work via copyright claim, as the fact that they’ve remade the assets afterwards should mean that they won’t earn the ire of Nintendo’s lawyers.

If you want to try this out for yourself, then you can head over to Taylor S. Ellis’ Patreon page and download it for yourself. You’ll have to make an account and sign up to get access to it, but you won’t have to pay a penny to download it once you do.

Of course, this is only a small slice of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, so don’t start getting your hopes up regarding a full, Unreal Engine 5-powered playthrough.

Hopefully, Ellis continues working on the project and adds in some new areas though, because what they’ve managed to create so far is nothing short of ridiculously impressive.
