Steam’s Latest Free RPG Is Skyrim Alternative Made by Single Dev

A colossal undertaking for one person

A promising new RPG has arrived on PC storefront Steam.

It’s relatively early in the year so I’m going to assume, or at the very least hope, that your backlog isn’t quaking too much yet.

That’ll come as the year progresses and the rate at which new releases arrive speeds up - but for now, there’s every chance that you might actually be looking for something new to play.

Well, Faehnor Online might be it.

A Free MMORPG Created by a Single Developer, Available on Steam

Developed by a single dev under the studio name Wyrd Ark, Faehnor Online is a brand new handcrafted MMORPG that’s totally free-to-play and boasts a unique quick.

“This game was born from an unreasonable idea: creating a homemade MMORPG, without a big studio or a real budget — just stubborn passion and the desire to offer an adventure that truly feels handcrafted,” the game’s description reads.

“In this open world, exploration isn’t guided by an omnipresent mini‑map or a magic navigation system. Study paper maps and learn to find your way like a real adventurer. Getting lost is part of the journey — finding your way back always carries a small taste of victory.”

That’s the weird quick I was talking about. Don’t be misled by “paper maps”. They are, to my understanding, included within the game virtually.

Outside of navigation, players will need to fend off a variety of monsters. There are no skill trees to level up, but that’s not to say that there isn’t any progression.

Instead, players’ choices will determine their path in Faehnor Online.

You’ll also complete quests and engage in crafting, but there are no quest markers or obvious indicactors showing you the way.

Faehnor Online opts for an immersive approach, encouraging players to explore organically.

I will say that Faehnor Online remains in early access so there are plenty of new features on the way.

The game’s dev is working on an introductory cinematic, combat improvements, and a switch to Unreal Engine 5.

An English translation and voiceover is also in the works as the game was created in France.

An item shop is also coming but the dev is clear to stress that there are no pay-to-win items included.

Already the title has garnered ‘Mostly Positive’ reviews on Steam.

“I like the game. It’s well done for an alpha version. It’s not a classic MMO — it’s original, and I like that,” read one review.

“Looks really good. Can't wait till I can understand what I am reading,” added another Steam user, referencing the delayed English translation. You might want to hold off on playing until that arrives.

Still, I’d say Faehnor Online is worth wishlisting or keeping an eye on, especially if you’re a fan of Skyrim or The Elder Scrolls.

It’s got a nostalgic RPG feel to it which really scratches an itch.
