Following an investigation by Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit, a man has been jailed for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, after crying that he was going “to miss GTA” the same day he confessed to killing her.

Robert Richens, aged 35, pleaded guilty to the murder of Rachael Vaughan, aged 40, at a previous hearing on 12 December 2025.

He was sentenced on 6 February for life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 16 years and one month at a hearing at Oxford Crown Court.

At around 6.26am on 30 May last year, Richens called the force to say he had killed a woman. Sadly, after police and paramedics attended the scene, Vaughan was declared deceased and Richens was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The footage was released today by Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit, where Richens can be heard claiming to 999 he had “accidentally killed someone”.

He later cries: “I am being honest because I am ashamed of what I have done, I did not mean to kill this person."

You can watch it below, but be warned it makes for some distressing viewing.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Stuart May, of the Major Crime Unit, offered his condolences to Rachael’s family:

“My thoughts remain with Rachael Vaughan’s family and with everyone who loved her as they continue to face what is an unimaginable loss.

“Rachael was taken from them in the very place she should have felt safest — her own home.

“Robert Richens’ actions were heartless. He left Rachael alone in her house, made no attempt to help her or seek medical attention and he only contacted police when he had nowhere else to turn.“

Later, at the station, police body cam footage shows Richens saying “I’m going to miss GTA and that”.

He clarified it was GTA 6 he was worried about, where the officer responds he has “ages” until the game releases in November.

Our thoughts are with Rachael’s family during this tragic time. Her family have started a fundraiser in her memory.
