Years after World War Z 2 was cancelled, it looks like the franchise is getting a reboot or sequel.
If you’re a fan of zombie horror, you’ve more than likely read or heard about World War Z. It’s perhaps one of the most famous books in its genre.
Max Brooks’ novel became a critical and commercial hit, known for its portrayal of fictional interviews set in the aftermath of a war against a zombie plague.
It was made into a film starring Brad Pitt in 2013, which earned $540 million at the Box Office. However, despite the apparent success, it was criticised for deviating quite dramatically from its source material.

Following the release of the film, Paramount intended to turn it into a franchise, with the original plans allegedly involving a trilogy to be released during the 2010s.
However, the sequel fell into development hell and we never saw a follow-up.
Well, we did at least get that pretty cool Left 4 Dead-like video game, which ended up being a decent time. But in terms of film sequels, we haven’t really heard a peep since it was cancelled in 2019.
Now, it looks like World War Z 2 might actually become a reality. According to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, World War Z is at the top of the company’s priorities, along with some of its other flagship film and television franchises like Transformers, Star Trek, and Top Gun.

The revived interest in World War Z is credited alongside plans for more horror and R-rated comedies to be put into production.
As for what a World War Z sequel might entail, I’m sure fans of the book would appreciate a soft reboot that follows the narrative of the book a little closer.
If you ask me, the original novel is better suited as an episodic series than a film. All of the chapters are self-contained stories with their own characters and plotlines, so a TV miniseries where each episode adapts a chapter of the book makes more sense to me.
