A major Star Wars plot hole has been puzzling fans, but there’s a super simple explanation for its reason.
When it comes to fantastical tales of good vs evil, it doesn't get much better than what’s told in the Star Wars movies. Well, maybe apart from what was served up in the sequel trilogy, but we try to forget those when we can.
The sinister Galactic Empire, trying to take over and rule the galaxy with an iron fist, with Darth Sidious and Darth Vader at the helm. However, with the Rebel Alliance having the likes of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo on the team, the forces of good always stood a fighter's chance.
In the final prequel movie, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Padmé Amidala gave birth to twins, Luke and Leia.

However, with their father, Anakin Skywalker, truly on the path to the dark side at this point, the children were hidden away, living secret lives in an attempt to escape the clutches of their father, who would eventually become Darth Vader.
For the most part, the plan to keep Luke and Leia a secret went quite well. Though it does seem a tad unfair that Leia was adopted into royalty, and Luke lived a poor life in the Tatooine desert.
That being said, when it comes to Luke, especially, there was one major plot hole which had many fans scratching their heads. For example, Leia had the surname “Organa” but Luke retained “Skywalker” as his last name, which seems like a big oversight.
“Why is Luke’s last name Skywalker and not Lars if the purpose was to keep him hidden from Darth Vader?” asked Reddit user, External-Recipe-1936. For context, Luke was adopted by Owen and Beru Lars.

Unfortunately, the answer to that question might be a lot less interesting than we thought.

“There is a deleted scene where Gold Leader mentions knowing Luke’s father,” explained ElectronicDeal4149. “Basically, George Lucas didn’t plan for a whole trilogy when he was making Star Wars: A New Hope; he was just trying to get the movie made.”
“That’s also why Obi-Wan calls him ‘Darth’ in Star Wars: A New Hope. That was meant to be his name originally, and then later, George Lucas retconned it to be a Sith title,” added Kahls.
So, there you have it, Luke Skywalker still had the same last name as his father, despite being hidden away from his clutches, because George Lucas seemingly never thought to change it.
