Star Wars Alternate Sequel Trilogy Plans Praised By Viewers

I’d be down with this!

A Star Wars alternate sequel trilogy has been improved by a popular actor from the franchise, and fans agree.

Without question, Star Wars is one of the most popular and iconic franchises in all forms of entertainment, whether it's TV and film or video games. For the most part, fans of the Lucasfilm property have been fed well. Apart from quite recently, that is.

The original Star Wars trilogy from 1977 to 1983 that consisted of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, in my humble opinion, these three offerings are the absolute peak for the movie series.

The prequel trilogy from 1999 to 2005 was a mixed bag, to put it simply. As much as I love Star Wars, I’ll never be in a rush to rewatch The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones. However, I can rewatch Revenge of the Sith countless times.

Then we have the sequel trilogy from 2015 to 2019. It started strongly with The Force Awakens, but it all went downhill after that. With a mix of unlikeable characters, plot holes and story contradictions, this trilogy eventually came to its end with The Rise of Skywalker.

By the time I got to Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, I was watching out of pure stubbornness, and I was happy when it ended. But that’s not to say that I wanted it to be better, because the Star Wars franchise deserved so much better than what we got with the sequel trilogy.

I know that I’m not the only one who feels that way, as many more Star Wars fans knew the franchise deserved better. John Boyega, who played Finn in the sequel trilogy, also seemingly agrees.

As brought to our attention by the Twitter account DiscussingFilm, during an interview with Popverse, Boyega outlined what he would have done differently.

Just a heads up, there will be some spoilers for the Star Wars sequel trilogy, just in case you’ve not watched it yet.

Boyega said that the popular original characters wouldn't have died, such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia; all of those deaths were very underwhelming, in my opinion. He also said that their stories would be fulfilling to honour their legacies.

New characters wouldn't have been so overpowered, such as almost instantly mastering skills that might typically take years to learn.

For example, I would assume that he might be referring to how characters like Rey mastered the ways of the Force so easily and became a lightsaber master. Finn also wielded a lightsaber for a very brief time, but it was nowhere near the level of Rey, who, in fairness, was the main character.

He said that we would also add story elements from the video game series, The Old Republic and Force Unleashed, which I’m sure could have been fantastic if done right.

“Remember, John is a Legends lover,” said MentorSkywalker, replying to the tweet by DiscussingFilm.

“Star Wars fumbled by not making Finn a Jedi by the end of the trilogy. Stormtrooper to Jedi would be an elite story,” replied Greedyszn1.

“Should have just done the Timothy Zahn novels,” suggested BlueHelldiver. “They could have printed money.”

“So basically… he’d make it not suck,” said the blunt rfngljaspe.

While the damage of the sequel trilogy is long done, let’s just hope that when the next batch of Star Wars movies arrives, it does the franchise justice.

Speaking of which, the next movie to arrive is The Mandalorian and Grogu, and it’s currently set to be released at cinemas on 22 May 2026.
