Star Wars Surprise Sequel Teaser Leaves Viewers Quietly Optimistic

In case you missed it, a new teaser for an upcoming Star Wars film was released online earlier this week, giving us an early look at the 2027 film.

Star Wars fans have quite a few reasons to get excited about the next few upcoming projects. Next year, we’ve got The Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as Maul – Shadow Lord. And let’s not forget the video games Star Wars: Zero Company and Star Wars: Beyond Victory.

Looking a bit further ahead, Star Wars: Starfighter is intended to be Disney’s big release for the franchise’s 50th anniversary, and so far it’s sounding pretty good.

While we haven’t got a proper trailer, character bios, or plot synopsis yet, director Shawn Levy has released a new image of Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray, who are playing the film’s two leads.

The image depicts Gosling with his signature “Literally me” facial expression, along with Gray, as they both shoot a scene in Sardinia, Italy.

Star Wars fans seem to be united over the image, quietly optimistic for the film which is still just under two years away from release.

“Seeing the movie being shot on location instead of green screen/volume is exciting. I have a good feeling about this,” reads one comment on the Star Wars Reddit page.

“I keep hearing about Star Wars films and they never get made. Exciting to see this is actually in production,” another commenter added.

“Gosling pretty much gets the benefit of the doubt on this seemingly totally bluesky StarWars project. I will allow myself to be hyped for now,” a third comment added.

However, some fans were a little more divided, with one writing: “Really hope the plot leaks about him protecting the kid aren't real. Could we please stop with the "father figure protecting child" plot element?

“From The Mandalorian getting hijacked into babysitting Grogu, Kenobi protecting little Leia and the Bad Batch protecting Omega, it's become a sorely overused trope. Like seriously I can't be the only one to notice this?”

Star Wars: Starfighter began filming in August in the United Kingdom, before production moved to Sardinia in mid-September. In addition to Gosling and Gray, the film also features Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, and Aaron Pierre in undisclosed roles.

The film is due to release in cinemas on 28th May, 2027, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of Star Wars.
