Highly-anticipated AAA RPG narrows down launch date as PS5 disc copies confirmed

It might’ve taken a long time to get here, but we finally know Persona 6 is on the way. Following the release of Persona 5 in 2016, we've been left twiddling our thumbs and waiting for official word on what's next.

That finally came in the form of a surprise trailer drop at June's Xbox showcase, although there wasn't much to go on. The suitably grim trailer gave us the briefest of looks at the next Persona and a title reveal alongside confirmation that it's coming to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

We've been left in the dark since then, and to be honest, we've had bigger things to worry about in terms of Xbox restructurings, Nintendo price hikes, and Sony moving out of the market for creating physical games.

However, the Blue Team might've accidentally spoiled Persona 6's release window.

SEGA listing could reveal Persona 6 release window

Sony is currently in many gamers' bad books, and with some vowing to boycott PlayStation for the indefinite future, could they even be missing out on Persona 6?

We hope not, because we know SEGA's upcoming RPG will be getting a physical release on PS5.

SEGA's official post announcing Persona 6 seemingly confirmed the game will be coming with a disc version, meaning it has to arrive before that looming January 2028 axing of physical games.

Persona 6 is coming to Xbox Series X|S and on Game Pass, Steam, and PS5, although the post contains the following caveat: "Only physical copies of the PlayStation®5 version are available."

While this suggests Persona 6 won't be on the PS Store, it seems like an unusual stipulation now that we know Sony is turning its back on physical releases.

Importantly, you're reminded that Sony's official physical media announcement added that "this transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format."

Persona 6 release window rumours

With fans doing some more digging, it all lines up with a supposed insider tease on the r/GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit. While we have to err on the side of caution when it comes to this kind of leak, an earlier post pencilled in September 2, 2027, for the big day.

Even though that's still just over a year away, we guess that Persona 6 having to make it out before Sony's disc cull is good news for fans of the franchise.

Some in the thread weren't so sure, with another adding: "Physical copy might mean code in a box + that post was made before July 1st when Sony announced the end of discs. Don't get your hopes up yet."

A third joked: "If it's delayed to February 2028 it's gonna be just Paper in Plastic Edition."

There’s also the fact that the original post is from SEGA’s Japanese site, meaning we could get a physical Xbox release in other territories.

Until we get word from up high, it's best to temper our expectations.

As we've seen with everything from Fable to GTA VI, AAA delays are par for the course these days, although we don't know how that'll work if Persona 6 is going to hit that pretty tight window.

Others point out that 2027 could be unbelievably packed for RPGs, with the likes of Persona 6, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and Kingdom Hearts IV all being potential GOTY candidates.

If Persona 6 is out in 2027, it'll be a glorious double whammy of the next mainline entry and Persona 4 Revival.
