It's been almost a decade and a half since the release of the last Elder Scrolls game and, given that we're likely not getting the next one any time soon, we need to look elsewhere for our fix of might and magic.
Fortunately, there are plenty of options out there that hit similar notes if you know where to look, even if they have gone in a different direction overall with their chosen tone or aesthetic.
At the same time, the lessening of the boundaries between the different platforms has meant that more games are coming to more consoles (and PCs) than ever, which can only be a good thing for us players.
Now, one of the better RPG efforts of the last few years is heading out to new frontiers, as PlayStation players can finally get their hands on it.
Avowed Headed to PlayStation Next Month

Advert
As first reported by IGN, developer Obsidian has confirmed that their most recent flagship RPG, Avowed, is about to head over to PlayStation for the first time, as part of the raft of announcements in the New Game+ Showcase.
The arrival of the game on PS5 on the 17 February will coincide exactly with the release of the Anniversary Update for the game, which rolls out on all platforms with some major changes to the existing offering.
Specifically, it adds the highly requested New Game Plus for the first time, as well as a Photo Mode, a new weapon type, three new races to play (Aumaua, Orlan, and Dwarves), the ability to change appearance in the overworld after creation, and several other impressive upgrades.
The update will be free for anyone who already owns the game, regardless of your platform of choice, with pre-orders on the PlayStation 5 version live now, if you do want to get ahead of the game.

Whilst Avowed wasn't really the most groundbreaking RPG in terms of mechanical advancements, it really is unfairly looked back upon. The story is well written and there are plenty of beautiful and interesting locations to explore. The build systems also work well, and it's pretty easy to spend tens of hours exploring everything it has to offer, without feeling like you're doing anything too repetitive.
It's well worth a go if you're locked into the PlayStation 5, and it gives you something to do over the next five years while you wait for more Elder Scrolls.
