Zelda-inspired Sephiria launches on Steam with overwhelmingly positive reviews

If you’re a fan of The Legend of Zelda, then there’s every chance that you’ll love this new Steam game that you can check out for free right now.

When it comes to iconic and legendary RPG adventures, it doesn't get more so than Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda, which originally released on the NES in 1986. Since that time, it has continued to inspire countless games over the years, from massive AAA titles to a plethora of indie darlings.

Perhaps the most inspirational era of The Legend of Zelda series is from the 80s and 90s, rather than the huge open-worlds that we find in the likes of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. After all, nothing quite hits those nostalgia feels like cosy sprite visuals and audio.

Sephiria is a treat for old-school Zelda fans

The game that is the main topic of discussion for this article is the indie title Sephiria, developed and published by Team Horay. What’s more, not only does this game have vibes of old-school Zelda, but it also has vibes of beloved indie roguelite titles such as Hades, Enter the Gungeon and Vampire Survivors.

“Save Bunnyville from a doomed fate: a top-down action/RPG roguelite from the makers of Dungreed. Explore the depths of the tower, collect and upgrade artefacts, and defeat hordes of demons to keep your village safe,” reads the synopsis of Sephiria on Steam.

Initially, Sephiria launched as a Steam early access title on April 3, 2025, but it recently celebrated its full “1.0” launch on July 31, 2026, and it’s fair to say that it’s been well-received by the community, overwhelmingly so.

Sephiria 1.0 brings more levels, including a final chapter and boss. New weapons, upgrades, abilities, an increased inventory, additional difficulties and more.

What has the community been saying about Sephiria?

Taken from well over 1,000 reviews, at the time of writing, Sephiria is rated as “Overwhelmingly Positive” on Steam.

“Without a doubt, 10/10,” declared Steam user SilentuDono.

“50% of this game is literally just sitting still and rearranging your inventory. This isn't a roguelite, this is a puzzle game,” wrote Rice. “10/10 experience, would never change it.”

“Sephiria is one of the best roguelikes out there," said arkkus.

“I enjoyed this more than Hades 1 and 2,” added Some Flowers.

As of right now (08/05/26), according to SteamDB, Sephiria has an all-time concurrent player peak of 28,924. So, it wouldn't be surprising if that number grows in the coming days and weeks.

At the time of writing, there has been no word as to whether Sephiria will come to consoles, but hopefully that will change one day.
