The God of War series from Amazon has found its Odin, and it’s great news. Now we think the Atreus casting could be next level.
As soon as God of War made its debut on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, it instantly became one of Sony’s flagship video game brands.
We played as a rage-induced and vengeful Kratos, who has sworn vengeance on the Gods of Olympus after being cruelly tricked into killing his wife and daughter.
On top of that, the gameplay of God of War was brutal and high-octane, slaying unfortunate foes from limb to limb with the Blades of Chaos, and brutally slaughtering any god that would dare oppose Kratos. And that included his father, the king of the gods and the ruler of Mount Olympus, Zeus.

The popularity of the God of War series would later spawn multiple sequels and spin-offs across PlayStation generations, with the most recent being 2023’s God of War: Ragnarök.
God of War Live-Action Series Is on the Way!
Following multiple rumours, in May 2022, the God of War live-action series coming to Amazon’s Prime Video was officially announced. However, since that time, we never heard much else about the series, at least officially.
Well, that was until January this year, when the casting for Kratos was announced. I think it was a casting that few saw coming, but one that is pretty much perfect. He certainly has the voice and presence to pull the role off, in my opinion. Then, rolling on from that announcement, we learned who is reportedly being lined up to play the goddess, Sif, the wife of Thor.
Now, as brought to our attention by The Game Awards host, Geoff Keighley, we not only know who will be playing Thor, but also the king of the Norse gods, Odin.
Who Will Be Playing Odin and Thor in God of War?
The role of Odin has been cast to Mandy Patinkin, who has starred in productions including the TV series Homeland, Chicago Hope and much more. Mandy Patinkin is not only a fantastic actor, but, at least going by Odin in God of War Ragnarök, he looks the part.
As for the role of Thor, that officially belongs to Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and talk about looking the part, he’s absolutely nailed it. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is perhaps best known for his role in the TV series, Severance.
It does feel like Amazon is knocking it out of the park when it comes to announcing the cast for God of War, and we can’t wait to see who’s next. If these casting choices are anything to go by, I’d be surprised if any will be disappointing.
Who Could Play Atreus?
Hopefully, the role of Kratos’s son, Atreus, is next and maybe even Freya.
For Atreus, fans have one actor in mind. Young Emmy-winner Owen Cooper, who you might know from the hit show Adolescence. If you've seen it, you know this young man is something special - his role in Adolescence was haunting, and it was his first acting role, ever! He's starring in Emerald Fennel's upcoming Wuthering Heights movie, but nothing else has been announced. He would be great!
So far, we’ve not had an actor from the video game series reprise a role, but if that happens to just one actor, I’m rooting for Danielle Bisutti, who played Freya, the Queen of the Valkyries and the goddess of love in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök
