Amazon Prime Video has finally cast Kratos in its God of War television series currently in development, and the choice appears to have blindsided a lot of fans.
Originally reported to be in development in 2022, there have been a lot of recent rumours and leaks surrounding casting for the upcoming God of War series from Amazon Prime Video.
Following a leaked casting call from last October, news about Kratos’ casting ramped up in early December after a leaked shortlist of actors was revealed which included Jason Momoa, Travis Fimmel, and Winston Duke.
It turns out that Amazon didn’t end up going with any of those actors though, instead picking actor Ryan Hurst to play Kratos, the lead role in the series.

Hurst has enjoyed television roles such as Opie Winston in FX’s Sons of Anarchy and Beta in The Walking Dead. His film roles include Gerry Bertier in Remember The Titans and Jedidiah in Rango.

Ryan Hurst Has Already Appeared In The God Of War Series
Funnily enough though, Hurst also did the voice work and motion capture for Thor in God of War: Ragnarok, the latest game from Sony’s flagship action franchise.

The choice appears to have blindsided fans who were expecting someone unconnected to the franchise to play Kratos, with many reactions ranging from confusion to excitement.
“Bl**dy hell who saw that coming?” writes one fan on the God of War Reddit page.
“I did not see that coming. I love Ryan so I hope this really works out for him,” writes another fan in the same thread.
“Being friends with Christopher Judge will probably help him fit into the role a little easier and he's got the height + body for it. So we'll have to see. No matter what, this is going to be a difficult thing to pull off. So best of luck to the team.”

“I actually don’t mind it. I still think this series is a mistake but Hurst has great screen presence and already has a connection to the franchise. If there’s a problem with the show, I’m sure he won’t be one of them,” writes a third fan.
Amazon’s God of War series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions, and will air on Prime Video when it releases.
Other cast members have not been announced yet, but with the series expected to adapt the Norse saga of the games, we should assume that roles for Atreus, Freya, Odin, and Mimir will be announced in the near future.
We're excited to see him on our screens in God of War - best of luck Ryan!
