God Of War Live-Action Casting Gets A Big Update

The show was greenlit in 2022.

Amazon's live-action casting for the God of War TV series has just received a big update.

A God of War live-action series was confirmed by Sony to be in development since March 2022, with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios producing it in association with PlayStation Productions.

Although the project has remained a little quiet since then, it sounds like production might finally be ramping up thanks to a big casting update.

As reported by Hollywood insider DanielRPK, Prime Video's God of War series has now allegedly started casting the main roles that'll appear in the series.

This was revealed through a series of casting calls for specific characters, revealing a little more about the profile of actors being considered, as well as their role in the show. Most notably, it confirms that the show may be using elements of both God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok.

Whether this means the show will be completely ignoring the Greek saga or will make small references to it over time remains to be seen. For the sake of not confusing casual fans, I can't imagine it'll weave the Greek mythology too heavily into the story.

If you read through the casting call yourself, either via DanielRPK's Patreon post or the associated Reddit post, you'll be able to see these role descriptions for yourself. As always, take these with a grain of salt if it's not confirmed by an official source.

While each one is described pretty accurately to how they're represented in the games, there are a few nuggets of information we can get from this.

For starters, Amazon is looking to cast an actor around "9 to 12" for Atreus, and the role is also described as a "One-Year Series Regular", meaning that they could potentially be recast for future seasons.

It's possible this was done to avoid the same criticisms aimed at Stranger Things' casting, where the show took long breaks between seasons and caused the teenage cast to age faster than their characters in the show.

However, given that three years pass between God of War and God of War: Ragnarok, this seems like an odd choice. That basically gives Amazon a three-year window to produce a second season, which presumably would be based on the events of Ragnarok. It's also worth noting that Atreus' actor in the games, Sunny Suljic, was not recast for Ragnarok.

Another thing to note is that the first season will also feature Odin, who did not appear physically in the first game but was a main character in Ragnarok.

This may possibly hint at some events from Ragnarok being brought forward for the first season. It could also mean the show will break away from the game's "one shot" style by featuring characters and scenes away from Kratos and Atreus.

Amazon's God of War series has not set a release window yet, but if casting is now underway, it's likely that filming could begin in the near future.
