Fallout Season 2 has done something that no previous Fallout media has done before, and lovers of the franchise both new and old are collectively losing their minds.
The Fallout series is incredibly rich when it comes to lore but like many open-world RPGs it can be easily missed depending on how you play the game. I’m still discovering new stuff on a replay of the games and while reading every entry on every terminal sounds tedious and boring it can yield some highly interesting stuff.
Fallout Season 2 recently aired its fourth episode and those who are new to the Fallout series as well as those who’ve played the games but not done studied the lore were shocked to see what appeared to be a pre-war Deathclaw.
In a flashback scene with Cooper Howard the The Ghoul before he turned extra crispy was gunned down by Chinese soldiers, but thankfully his power armour kept him protected. He was immobilised though, but before the soldiers could finish him off a Deathclaw emerges and tears them apart.

Many viewers were shocked to see the beast appear before the bombs had dropped, but hardcore Fallout fans will know the Deathclaws pre-date the nuclear armageddon that devastated the planet, surviving and thriving in the following fallout.

In lore Deathclaws were genetically engineered as weapons that could be deployed like soldiers to clear out areas the U.S wanted to take over, which is why Cooper Howard encounters one on his mission in the Episode 4 flashback.
Further experimentation was done on the species in the years that followed with many breaching containment and escaping into the wasteland, where they then bred and became the apex predators we know them as today.
Across the games you meet many different versions, including some intelligent ones capable of speech.
Now a Deathclaw is on the verge of attacking Lucy and The Ghoul in the remnants of New Vegas, marking the first time The Ghoul has been visually terrified.
It makes sense considering in most games the sight of a Deathclaw is usually followed by a swift and painful death, even if you’re rocking power armour. Fallout 4 got a lot of hate from players for making the Deathclaws too easy to kill.
With more flashback scenes likely on the way we’re expecting a deeper dive into the history of the Deathclaws in future episodes, and we’re interested to see how Lucy and The Ghoul fare when they try to fight one.
