Fallout 5 Gets Long Awaited Update From Todd Howard

It's the usual crumbs

If you’re feeling a little untoward about the distinct lack of Fallout 5, it’s okay. Todd Howard is completely aware.

Is he going to do anything to ease your woes though? Not exactly.

In an interview with Game Informer, Bethesda’s head honcho confirmed that he understands the “anxiety from fans” when it comes to the lack of Fallout 5.

It’s at this point that I imagine you’re hoping he offered a glorious tidbit about the title.

He did confess, “We are doing other things with Fallout that we haven’t announced. And, you know, there’ll come a time for that.”

Multiple Unannounced Fallout Projects Are In Development

For now though, Howard is keen to direct your attention to Fallout 76 instead.

“Looking at [Fallout 76], we’ve never stopped developing Fallout," he explained.

“We’ve had a full team on it for a long time, so Fallout, as a franchise, is the one that we’re still doing the most work in, above anything. Now, the majority of our internal team is on Elder Scrolls VI.”

He continued, “I get the sort of anxiety from fans, like, 'What else? Feed me!' But, look, we’re working on stuff. And, you know, we do like to wait.”

“And so, I think there will be a moment to talk about [Fallout’s future], and we want to make those special moments for our fans,” he concluded.

It’s not all that different to what he’s said about the franchise’s future on previous occasions.

It is a blessed relief to hear that Fallout has a future; it may feel like a given, but Fallout 5 is so intangible that it doesn’t always feel that way.

Howard’s reference to projects “we haven’t announced” sparks plenty of questions.

Is this the Fallout 5 tease we so desperately crave? Could it be referring to the rumoured remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas?

Here’s what we do know. The Elder Scrolls VI remains Bethesda’s top priority, although rumours suggest Starfield may be getting new content soon.

The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced in 2018, so a new reveal is definitely long overdue. I truly do believe we’re not that far away from such a thing.

This year will mark four years since Starfield launched, so that means The Elder Scrolls VI has been the main focus of development for that period of time.

While the game’s launch could still be a year or so away, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect an update on The Elder Scrolls VI’s progress.

After all, Starfield’s official teaser trailer landed in 2021, three years after the studio’s prior game, Fallout 76, launched.

We’ve already surpassed that gap so we’re within the ballpark of a reveal possibility.

Perhaps this summer’s Xbox Games Showcase will finally bring us the trailer we’ve all been waiting years for.

And then Fallout 5 will have to wait until five or so years after that. Sigh.
