Steam is issuing refunds to users following an accidental release on its platform.

According to Backlinko.com, the Steam platform on PC is one of the most popular digital storefronts across all formats with over 50,000 games to choose from, as of March 2021. So an occasional hiccup is expected from time to time, especially if a game was accidentally released ahead of schedule.

However, what about a game that initially launched just shy of ten years ago? Well, as reported by Comicbook.com, that’s exactly what happened when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows seemingly re-launched on Steam.

Developed by Red Fly Studio and published by Activision, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was first released for PC and Xbox 360 in August 2013, before arriving on PlayStation 3 in April 2014.

Granted, TMNT: Out of the Shadows is not a very good game, at all. In fact on Metacritic, it scored a lowly 38 from critics and 5.4 from users. Yet, this is the four Heroes in a Half-Shell that we’re talking about here, and some fans are happy to get a taste of that Turtle Power ooze any chance they get.

Roughly four years after its digital-only launch, TMNT: Out of the Shadows was delisted from all storefronts on 4 January 2017, due to publisher Activision deciding not to renew its TMNT licence. So when Out of the Shadows suddenly appeared on Steam, some users were more than happy to make the premature $14.99 purchase.

For those that purchased the game, realising the error of its ways, Steam pulled it from its platform and began issuing refunds to its customers. Will Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows return officially one day? It’s unlikely, and to be honest, this is one game that’s probably best suited to hiding in the shadows of New York City.

That being said, one game that should never be hidden away is the brilliant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, which we said in our review is: “a contemporary masterpiece of its kind, an exemplary demonstration of how to spruce up a stylistic road well walked already after so many go-straight experiences, and somehow make the journey so much more special than the destination.”

What’s more, another new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is on the way and it’s said to be inspired by Santa Monica Studios’, God of War.
