Star Wars' First Official Sequel To Episode 9 Finally Doing Underrated Character Justice

He deserved better

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker was an unsatisfying end to the sequel trilogy, but we’re finally getting a continuation.

What started off fairly strongly with Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens quickly deteriorated into messy scripts, actors losing their motivation and a final scene that left viewers feeling hollow.

It’s no wonder that Star Wars: Starfighter is said to be set several years after the events of Rise Of Skywalker, and likely won’t have any relation to its story or characters when things were mismanaged that badly.

We could go on and on about everything that went wrong but I think we can all agree the biggest victim of the sequel trilogy’s lacklustre storytelling was Finn, an ex-Storm Trooper that could have given us so many interesting plotpoints, but was dropped too soon.

Even John Boyega has publicly slated Disney’s decision to push Finn to the side, and while he’ll probably not play the character on-screen again Finn’s story is continuing in the form of a novel titled Star Wars: The Last Order. The book will be released worldwide on 21 October, and yes, it’s about Finn’s history as a Storm Trooper.

The novel’s synopsis reads: “Following the end of Star Wars:The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime.

“Take a deep dive into the pasts of popular characters Finn and Jannah in this richly-drawn, action-packed story that fans have been asking for.”

Star Wars fans were thrilled to finally see Finn getting more attention, and shared their takes on the story online.

“Super pumped that we’re finally getting canon post-TROS content” said one fan, with another saying “I am certainly curious how much the book will actually be Post-TROS since the book is also supposed to cover Finn's and Jannah's Pre-TFA pasts.”

Another said “Thanks for sharing! For some reason I was imagining this story would be told from Finn's POV. Maybe they're saving the next part of Finn's story for a movie?”

A spin-off film about Finn would be cool but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. That said Daisy Ridley is supposedly returning for a film about Rey at some point so perhaps Finn will return too.
