Classic Super Mario banger gets free remaster for PC

A classic Super Mario game has just received a free remaster on PC.

With us now living in a world of unofficial PC ports and free fangames, it comes as no shock that players will attempt to bring over the full Nintendo library one way or another.

The latest release is a revival of Super Mario World, playable on PC and completely free.

As reported by DSO Gaming, Super Mario World Remastered is a port of the original game for PC using Super Mario Bros. X, which is essentially a framework that allows players to create their own Mario levels on PC.

This version of Super Mario World includes updated graphics in the form of new tilesets, custom backgrounds, and new level layouts. However, it should still be the same SNES game that we know and love.

Super Mario World Remastered is a great throwback for any fans of the original SNES game

Using Super Mario Bros. X, the framework allows users to use modern improvements such as custom assets and enhanced physics to make it feel like a modern Mario game.

It should mean that you strike a nice balance between having the traditional Mario gameplay from the SNES and more modern improvements that have been adapted over the years.

This release adds custom graphics available for players to use, along with new aspects added to the HUD and other improvements that fit a wide-screen version of the game as opposed to the 4:3 resolutions seen in the original.

You can download Super Mario World Remastered from the official website, and as DSOG notes, you'll also need to have the SMBX2 Beta 5 Patch 4 to play it.

Considering Nintendo's lawyers may jump on the opportunity to take this down, we'd recommend checking it out sooner rather than later if you're a fan of Mario, as there's no telling how long it'll be before it gets taken down.

Similarly, you can also play other remasters of Mario games such as Super Mario Bros. Remastered, which acts like a recompiled version of the original 1985 game complete with support for custom texture packs and fan-made levels. It's been my go-to Mario game for the past few weeks, when I just want a simple Nintendo throwback to play instead of something more modern. You'll need to own the original game in order to play it properly, though.
