Of all the adaptations of Spider-Man that we have been treated to in recent years, none, as far as I'm concerned, come particularly close to wrestling the crown from Sam Raimi's Sony Pictures trilogy, starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker.
The MCU films starring Tom Holland might have the better effects, but there's something intangible about those earlier movies that it really feels like the more recent efforts struggle to capture. That may well be one of the reasons that Maguire, and indeed Andrew Garfield, cropped up in the Holland-fronted No Way Home.
It seems I'm not the only one who yearns for his return as the character, and there's some hope for us as it turns out, if the writer of The Batman gets his way.

The Batman Writer Wants Maguire To Return
The writer of The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as The Caped Crusader, as well as the upcoming sequel, Mattson Tomlin, has weighed in several times to lay out exactly how he would write a new Spider-Man movie and why he wants to bring Maguire on board once again.

Back in July, Tomlin responded to a fan who asked where he would take the character, if he were given the opportunity to write the screenplay. In response, the writer had a very clear vision for what he would like to do, saying "Honestly right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father. Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films."
It seems his interest hasn't ended there though, as he continues to fan the flames of speculation on social media. Over on Twitter/X, one fan asked if there had been any movement on a potential Spider-Man 4, and it's safe to say that Tomlin's response hasn't quite put the rumours to bed.
"Slow and steady wins the race. There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven’t gotten a “no” yet," he claimed.
Though it would be lovely to have another Spider-Man movie with Maguire as the star, it's going to take a long time to iron out all of the wrinkles between Sony and Marvel for additional Spider-Man projects outside of Holland's appearances in the MCU. It's not going to stop me from dreaming though.
