Spider-Man 4 Will Never Happen According to MCU Director

No, not THAT Spider-Man 4-- the other one

According to the legendary director behind the first three Sony Spider-Man films, we’ll never be getting a fourth entry in his series– at least, not with him at its helm.

Alright, chill out; I’m obviously not referring to the Tom Holland Marvel Cinematic Films. If the thumbnail didn’t already give it away, I’m talking about Sony’s Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films.

Now, I’ll be honest, I never personally thought this would happen anyway. I get why some folks did, but the last Tobey Maguire Spidey film was all the way back in 2007.

Sure, Sony did spend a long time trying to get their own Spidey-less Morbius-verse cinematic universe off the ground for a while, so anything is possible, but I just don’t think Hollywood execs would go for something like this these days.

Unfortunately, there’s no need to theorise anymore, as Screen Rant recently sat down with the director of the original Spider-Man trilogy, Sam Raimi, and he outright stated that it wouldn’t “be right” for him to “go back and try and resurrect [his] version of this story.”

“Stan Lee’s great character — that a bullpen of writers in New York at Marvel had come up with stories for — he created the character, but so many people contributed, so many artists, that for a brief time I was handed the torch to carry on after 40 years of Spider-Man comics,” Raimi told Screen Rant.

“And then after my three movies, I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they’ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer.”

To be fair to those who are feeling crushed by this news, there was reason to suspect that a fourth Tobey Spidey film was a possibility.

Obviously, he popped up in the ridiculously successful Spider-Man: No Way Home, but there were also plans for a sequel to Spider-Man 3 in 2008… before Sony decided to can the project.

That being said, hey, there’s still a chance that a fourth might happen. It just won’t be directed by Raimi if it does.

Also, there’s always the possibility of Tobey Maguire (and even Andrew Garfield) popping up in Avengers: Secret Wars.

It would kind of be silly for Disney and Marvel not to capitalise on their popularity while they still can. If they don’t do something with them in the next 10 years, our next best bet would be seeing Tobey Maguire pop up as Uncle Ben in the 2060s.
