I’m sort of past the point of caring whether other people like the Amazing Spider-Man duology, but regardless of what I think of it, it’s fair to say that it’s the most divisive movie version of the web slinger thus far.
Andrew Garfield’s turn as the hero is relatively well liked, but many of the plotting decisions and overall direction left some with a bad taste, meaning that we never made it to the heady heights of a third movie.
Whilst we did get to see the actor return in No Way Home, it gave most of us only another glimpse at what might have been, had he been allowed to star in movies of genuine, immense quality.
That said, many are not yet ready to let the dream of another Garfield-fronted Spider-Man movie die and they take every opportunity to ask him about it. Including GQ, who recently sat down with the actor to talk about his career and discuss what’s next, and in terrible news for those holding out hope, it might be all over.

Garfield took the opportunity to slap down any rumours of a return, bluntly saying, “It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen.”
So not good news then, but why exactly did it all go away in the first place? As with many of these things, it likely came down to money, though Sony were never actually officially drawn on why they shelved confirmed plans for a third film.
The first Amazing Spider-Man movie drew an impressive enough $757 million at the box office, more than enough to justify the sequel. Unfortunately, that sequel failed to meet expectations, falling marginally short of the original with a $709 million taking worldwide.
The enormous successes of the Tom Holland led MCU Spider-Man movies will have left plans for any potential third movie even further in the mud, as both Sony and Marvel continue to cash in at the box office with each passing release.

Sony’s own attempts to produce Spider-Man adjacent films in recent years will have done little to help that as well. Both Madame Web and the oft-memed Morbius are the most obvious examples, with both entirely failing to come close to turning a profit for the company.
Instead, we’ll just have to watch Andrew Garfield in one of the several projects he’s slated to star in over the next year.
