Spider-Man: Brand New Day Release Update Is a Major Blow to MCU

On the big screen, but not the biggest screen

Fans of Spider-Man may be slightly disappointed by the most recent update to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will see it skipping IMAX cinemas.

The future of the MCU is looking rather bright at the moment, with two recent hits in Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, along with an upcoming Avengers team-up, and a new Spider-Man adventure.

Usually, fans would be able to watch the newest Marvel films on the biggest screens in IMAX format, with stonking sound to boot.

However, in a recent announcement from IMAX themselves, during an investor presentation, it seems the next Spidey film won’t be swinging onto their screens.

A slide showed the films due for release in IMAX, and while there are obvious releases like Christopher Nolan’s epic, The Odyssey, it seems Disney isn’t going head-to-head with Greek myth.

This would have given us a perfect double bill of Tom Holland, as he’s starring in the Nolan blockbuster, as well as donning the Spidey suit once again.

One could assume it’s The Odyssey causing this choice, a clash that would have cinema goers choosing between the two, and perhaps IMAX is backing Nolan because the director is shooting specifically in IMAX format.

The Odyssey is due for an extended release, staying in cinemas longer than a film usually would, which means it would have to compete with Spider-Man two weeks into its run.

With IMAX becoming more and more popular, fans might be disappointed by the news, however, despite that popularity, IMAX screens are still sparse and so releases have to be greatly considered.

You’d think the latest Marvel film would be enough, but it seems like we’ll all be watching ancient Greek battles, rather than Spider-Man swinging through New York.

Here’s hoping Spider-Man: Brand New Day gets a later re-release for IMAX.
