The Witcher Surprise Delay Isn't What We Wanted To Hear

Not great news

The Witcher fans will be sad to hear about a devastating delay announced by CD Projekt Red.

With The Witcher IV as the company’s next major release fans have been patiently waiting for more news about the title, and any other Witcher-related projects currently in the works. Not The Netflix series though, I think everyone’s gone off that…

While nothing has been shared about the fourth game CD Projekt Red did deliver some bad news day regarding The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

In a tweet the studio said: “We originally planned to introduce cross-platform mod support for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S later this year, but the rollout is now shifting to 2026.

“We apologize for the delay and will share more details as we get closer to the release. Thank you for your patience!”

Not news we wanted to hear, but we’re well into September now so it could be a lot worse. That said CD Projekt Red hasn’t specified when in 2026 the update is expected to drop.

As the tweet suggests the plan for the update is to allow console players, those on PlayStation and Xbox, to be able to mod their game like PC players do.

It’s basically what modern Bethesda games allow, with a curated list of compatible mods available to download directly from the game itself, with moderation to prevent inappropriate or dangerous downloads.

Even though The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available on Nintendo Switch, and now Nintendo Switch 2, mod support won’t be made available for that platform.

While it’s not a deal-breaker it is a shame the feature is getting delayed, as a lot of fans were looking forward to it. What’s better than replaying the masterpiece that is The Witcher 3? Playing it in a completely different way thanks to mods of course.

It’s all well and good though as the feature will be with us before you know it, and hopefully it’s being considered for The Witcher IV too, though likely adding later via post-launch updates.

When mod support for The Witcher 3 does eventually launch there’s a good chance Cyberpunk 2077 could be next, as the modding community for that game is huge and it’d be nice for console players to be able to experience it for themselves.
