Mass Effect and Starfield players can check out one of the biggest sci-fi RPGs in recent times, ahead of an upcoming launch.

Over the years, we’ve been treated to some amazing sci-fi RPGs, perhaps largely inspired by the iconic George Lucas Star Wars movies. Such as the likes of Knights of the Old Republic, Deus Ex, Cyberpunk 2077, and many more.

However, for the topic of today’s article, the free sci-fi RPG in question is perhaps one that fans of the aforementioned Mass Effect series and Starfield will appreciate.

That game is the MMORPG, Star Citizen, developed and published by Cloud Imperium Games.

Yes, that's right. You can finally play Star Citizen. Here's how.

Star Citizen launched as an early access title in 2017, and to this day, the final version of the game hasn't been released, as it continues to bring in incredible crowdfunding numbers, garnering well over $900 million (and counting).

While we wait for its full launch (if that day will ever come), as brought to our attention by PCGamesN, Star Citizen is granting free access to the game for newbies in an event that provides you with five ships to explore outer space with.

When Does the Star Citizen Free Promotion End?

The free period promotion called ‘Free Fly Event’ removes the standard paywalled access for a limited time, with it coming to an end on Monday, 23 February 2026.

“From February 12 through February 23, play Star Citizen for free and pilot some of the most dependable ships in the universe, no strings attached. Whether you’re a veteran or newcomer, take to the stars and fall in love again and again and again,” reads the description of the promotion.

This free promotion comes not long after Cloud Imperium Games confirmed that single-player spin-off title, Squadron 42, is now fully playable, which might suggest that it's nearing its launch in a vague 2026 window.

The five free ships that you’ll have access to during this promotion are: Anvil Arrow, Argo Mole, Drake Cutlass Black, Drake Golem and the RSI Salvation (the latter of which is said to be “beginner friendly”).

Where Can I Sign up for the Free Star Citizen Promotion?

Simply visit the official Star Citizen website and create an account (if you don't have one already). Then download the launcher, and it’s pretty much away you go from that point.

For new players, it does feel like jumping into a huge game like Star Citizen can be quite a daunting prospect, but fear not! There is an optional tutorial and guides in-game. There is also a free ‘New Player Guide’ that you can check out.

Star Citizen is a PC exclusive.
