The Witcher IV will be ditching Geralt as our lead protagonist and making Ciri the star of the show, though in fairness she sort of was already.
Rather than the handful of playable segments like we got in The Witcher III: Wild Hunt the next game will see us solely seeing the world through Ciri’s eyes and we couldn’t be more excited.
The Witcher IV is a long, long way off though as CD Projekt Red doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes it made with Cyberpunk 2077. Development is moving along but the devs aren’t rushing anything as the backlash for a broken Witcher game would be far more severe than it was with the studio’s newest IP.
While we wait for CD Projekt Red to cook we’ve found an expansion mod that should give you a taste of what’s to come, Dawn over Kovir.

Dawn over Kovir is a fan-made expansion that adds a brand-new region to the game, with Ciri as its lead.
Its description says that “while hunting monsters, Ciri increasingly finds them not in the forests, but in people. Disillusioned with humanity, she balances between compassion and rage. Will the witcheress be able to master her anger and avoid becoming a monster herself?”

The mod was directly inspired by The Witcher IV’s reveal trailer which you can see from its design. It looks great and while it’s not a whole new game it’ll do while we wait for more news on the next.
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt’s Next Official Expansion
While these fan-made expansions are great there are rumours that CD Projekt Red is gearing up to drop a third official expansion for the game sometime this year.
This is exciting on a number of levels but mostly for its implications for The Witcher IV.
Chances are Geralt is the protagonist of the upcoming DLC but this feels like the perfect opportunity set-up the next game, and whatever journey Ciri is on that lands her in that new region.
It’d be a nice way for Geralt to officially pass the torch as while he’s expected to appear in the next game it’s becoming increasingly clear that his story is finished. It’s expected he’ll have a role similar to Vessemir, guiding Ciri on her journey and giving her helpful advice/teachings.
