Of all the introductions to all the video games in all the world, none are probably as well known as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at this point, with the iconic horse-and-cart trip into Helgen starting players on a journey that they’ve now been on for well over a decade.
That said, playing through it over and over again can become a little bit tiresome, and the fact that it’s now a meme which pops up in my YouTube Shorts all the time only makes that situation potentially worse.
Fortunately, the game’s extremely active modding community does everything it can to keep the experience fresh, including introducing new ways to start out on your journey across the home of the Nords.
Now, a new mod has just hit the scene that deepens your options considerably in the initial throes of the game.

It’s well worth downloading if you’re planning to play Skyrim again any time soon.

Why I Came to Skyrim – Origin Stories Puts the Choice in Players' Hands
Over on Nexus Mods, Why I Came to Skyrim – Select Your Own Quest has just been released, and it serves as an additional set of player-agency tools to add to the original mod, Why I Came to Skyrim – Origin Stories.
Origin Stories provides 40 additional quests at the start of your character’s journey, any of which can crop up to give you some extra purpose early on.
The Select Your Own Quest add-on essentially gives you the tools to manually select any of those quests when starting out, rather than waiting to see which ones appear organically.

You’ll be given an in-game book at the start which allows you to make selections via a series of questions about what it is you’d like to be doing in the early game, whether that’s tracking down an individual, hunting creatures or vampires, or even searching for hidden treasure.
It’s a great way of making the earliest portions of the game feel a lot more varied, and it removes the random nature of the original mod if there are certain quests you’d particularly prefer to avoid.
Why I Came to Skyrim is the only mod you’ll need to get this second edition to work.
There are some additional requirements and compatibility notes listed on the store page that you should keep an eye on if you want to use it.
Apart from that, it’s totally free to download from Nexus Mods right now, so what are you waiting for? Get out there and give it a go.
