This Balatro-Like Free Game Has Consumed Hours of My Life, Here's Why

I had to uninstall it

After losing days to Balatro throughout 2024 and 2025 I thought I’d finally kicked my rogue-like habit, but I was so, so wrong.

Many games have tried to capitalise on Balatro’s success and while many have succeeded there have been very few that have held my attention.

Ball X Pit is one I’ve been recommended a lot but after playing for a few hours it just wasn’t for me.

However, just the other week my best friend recommended a game called CloverPit. It’s currently available at no additional cost via Xbox Game Pass, and agreeing to give it a go felt like I’d just signed a deal with the devil.

Simply put CloverPit is a slot machine roguelike where the player is trapped in hell.

Held within a confined room decorated with a slot machine, an ATM, a red phone and a toilet the goal of the game is to amass as many coins as possible from the machine to pay a quota, but you only have a few rounds to meet the deadline.

To help you out you can spend tickets to purchase a random assortment of charms. Some change the probability of getting certain symbols, some boost your luck and others provide other benefits that can be chained together for powerful builds. After meeting a deadline the red phone will ring and grant you an ability, which can either make or break a run so be sure to choose carefully.

I wasn’t expecting much from CloverPit when I first started playing, but just like Balatro once I saw those stat boosters and multipliers at work I was hooked.

It’s not perfect mind you. I’d argue that Balatro was 70% skill and 30% luck. Even if the dealing wasn’t ideal you’d still have a good chance of working your way through the antes if you strategised a bit.

CloverPit is a bit more unforgiving as its core-gameplay mechanic is chance. Compared to Balatro it’s more like a 30% skill 70% luck split - even with an incredible build you’re still at the mercy of spinning wheels. Unlocking the game’s ending is also quite tricky without an online guide.

The game is still wickedly fun though and you’ll unlock more and more charms as you go, so there’s plenty of opportunity for experimentation with new builds.

You’ll quickly find your favourites and it never loses that high-risk, high-reward feeling. You could go all-in on making the 7s your most probable and powerful symbol but it won’t be easy, nor sustainable until you get several deadlines in and have all the charms/buffs you need.

I’d recommend CloverPit to anyone, especially those who play on Xbox and PC and have access to Xbox Game Pass.

That said, the game is less than a tenner on all platforms, which is a fair price for the hours you’ll probably get out of it.
