Brand new independent studio Soft Rains has been unveiled, bringing together talent from across the industry in both the AAA and indie sectors.

The studio, which features talent from Bethesda Softworks, Ubisoft Toronto, Capybara Games, and Riot, is in the midst of developing a new unannounced sci-fi first-person adventure title.

Little is known about the game beyond that, although a press release teases that it’ll bring “a modern twist to the genre”.

A trip over to the new Soft Rains website adds that the game will be single-player and set within a “lush, fantastical, sci-fi world”.

Accompanying concept images show the kind of worldspace we can expect to explore.

There’s almost a Lovecraftian feel, with the images showing unusual creatures lurking within the depths of space.

Soft Rains has been co-founded by studio head Joel Burgess, game director Matt Scott, technical director Jules Glegg, narrative director Kaitlin Tremblay, and world director Daryl Brigner.

Collectively, the group brings together experience from working on major titles like Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Valorant, A Mortician’s Tale, Grindstone, Left 4 Dead, and Watch Dogs Legion.

Sci-fi is all the rage, it seems, with Naughty Dog working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

“When we first started working on our upcoming game, we thought a lot about what type of science fiction we really connected with and were inspired by,” said narrative director Kaitlin Tremblay in a press release.

“We’re drawing from stories that challenge and inspire us, using speculative elements to dive into themes like identity, memory, and what it means to build a future together.”

The game is being made in Unreal Engine 5 and has actually been in development since 2022 so it’s feasible that we could see it fully unveiled within the next year or so.

The press release further detailed that “the game reimagines familiar gameplay frameworks with fresh mechanics and themes”.

“Soft Rains believes that great games come from collaboration, curiosity, and a shared desire to grow. As a studio, they aim to create bold, character-driven games with emotional depth and long-lasting impact.”

We’ll be keeping an eye on the development of this one.
