Nintendo gamers beware, a free Switch 2 feature has been given a deadline before it’s locked behind a paywall.
When the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, one of its key features promoted by Nintendo was the GameChat feature that’s been integrated into the console’s operating system.
The feature is essentially a party chat feature which allows you to chat with your mates while playing games on the Switch 2, something that consoles have allowed since the 2000s.
But the feature has never really been featured like this on a Nintendo console before. The DS had some group chat functionality, but the feature was severely limited on the Wii and Wii U. And on Switch, you had to use a mobile app to communicate.

It’s a classic case of Nintendo being pretty late to the party compared to its peers at Microsoft and Sony I guess, considering party chat has been around since the Xbox 360’s “New Xbox Experience” update in November 2008.
Nintendo Switch 2 Will Discontinue Free GameChat From April
The Nintendo Switch 2 has supported GameChat for up to 12 users since it launched in June 2025, advertised as being free for a majority of the first year.
However, GameChat will be changing to a premium feature of Nintendo Switch Online from 1 April, 2026.
After this point, you’ll need to have an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to chat with your mates while playing games.
That’s fine if you’re all playing games together, as you presumably already have a subscription, but if you don’t then you’ll be locked out.

I can’t say I’ve used GameChat all that much. Maybe once or twice with a few friends when the Switch 2 first came out. But despite it having a massive ‘C’ button on the controller, I can honestly say I keep forgetting this feature exists.
It’s basically a more locked-down version of Discord, limited only to those who have a Switch 2, and will soon be limited even more to people who pay for Nintendo Switch Online.
When Discord is available on PC and mobile quite freely, I’m not sure if this feature was ever going to take off.
The only real benefit GameChat has over Discord is that you can mirror your game screen to other players, something you can only do for Switch games on Discord using a capture card (or, I guess, setting up your phone to record your TV, but who does that in 2026?).
