Nintendo Switch users urged to update as new firmware fixes security flaw and improves VRR performance

Nintendo has dropped the latest system update for the Switch and Switch 2 to address the console's security vulnerability with version 23.0.0 after a flaw was discovered, and it gives the console a major VRR performance boost.

A security vulnerability was identified that would allow someone nearby your Nintendo Switch console to access it with relative ease, without you knowing or being given permission. They were able to do this by physically scanning a displayed QR code with their mobile device, displayed on your TV or the handheld console screen.

In particular, an unauthorised person could access your details via the ‘Send to Smartphone’ feature in the “Album” on your console and Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. Now, following this update, it shouldn't be quite as easy for an unauthorised person to access information without you knowing.

Now, let’s talk about the VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) improvement for the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a nutshell, VRR improves the performance of video games played on the console by modifying the display's refresh rate, which in turn should improve a game's frame rate, making for a smoother gameplay experience while reducing screen tearing.

The VRR improvement is for when the console is being played in docked mode on your TV. Due to the Nintendo Switch 2 being a more powerful console than its predecessor, the newly added VRR improvement is exclusive to Nintendo’s newest machine.
