Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the hardest FromSoftware game by far, fans say

A conversation about Bloodborne quickly led to fans declaring Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to be the hardest FromSoftware game so far.

FromSoftware games are infamous for their difficulty, and while they’ve become more accessible with titles like Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring, they’re always good for a challenge. But which is the most difficult? Fans reckon it’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Sekiro has always been regarded as the hardest souls game to play and master, requiring precision, patience and a little bit of luck. It’s those elements that have cemented the title as the soulsborne game you should never start with. This was confirmed by fans of the series, who commented on a Reddit post by user Glxyoea who was wondering if they should pick up another FromSoftware classic, Bloodborne. The post read, “Should I pick it up even though I've never played a souls game in my life? Or would it be too hard for me to enjoy?”

Take a look at Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in action below.

Among the comments praising Bloodborne for its masterful gameplay and themes, was another comment that said, “The hardest souls game is the first you pick up but also the most rewarding.” Some good advice, but it kicked off an entirely new conversation about Sekiro, with one commenter replying, “Except Sekiro, it's completely different.”

Other fans quickly agreed, sharing their own opinions and experience with the game compared to other soulsborne titles, many of which found Sekrio to offer the most in terms of challenge and brutality. “Too true. Beat every Souls game, platinumed Bloodborne— all to spend two weeks on attempts of the final boss of Sekiro. By the time I beat it, I wasn’t even happy, just relieved to be done," said one player, while another commented, "I just finished it Tuesday. Took a little over 100hr. Three bosses in particular were the bane of my existence.” Someone added, "I beat every FromSoft souls game and Sekiro was by far the hardest.”

There’s definitely a steep learning curve to Sekiro, so steep that many die-hard players believe you only start mastering the game’s mechanics around halfway through, but even then you need to keep your wits about you when facing off against enemies. Regardless of its difficulty, it’s one of the highest rated soulsborne titles out there, with outstanding scores on Metacritic.

After the success of Elden Ring, many fans are wondering what’s next for FromSoftware. The studio’s newest title, Armoured Core VI is releasing soon, and Elden Ring’s first DLC expansion Shadow of the Erdtree is currently in development. Many fans were also expecting a Bloodborne remaster for PS5 and PC, but that doesn’t seem like it’s happening after being absent from PlayStation’s recent PlayStation Showcase.
