Capcom has teased a new zombie behaviour in the long-awaited remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, and it sounds absolutely terrifying.
Originally released on the SEGA Dreamcast in 2000, Resident Evil Code: Veronica is already considered to be one of the most challenging games in Capcom’s iconic survival horror series.
When it comes to claustrophobic areas, challenging enemies, and limited resources, the game starring Claire and Chris Redfield takes the Resident Evil crown. However, after this recent Capcom tease, it looks like the upcoming remake could get a whole lot tougher.
Following months of rumours, Capcom finally revealed the Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake, not only causing a buzz for those in attendance at Summer Game Fest, but also for those millions of fans watching at home.
Any good remake should build upon what made the original game so successful. For example, in the fantastic Resident Evil remake in 2002 on the Nintendo GameCube, not only did we get new enemies and expanded lore, but we also got new areas. Following its Summer Game Fest reveal, the Resident Evil Code: Veronica looks to follow suit.

In the reveal trailer, we saw Claire Redfield in Paris, which is new to the remake, but more on that later. In terms of new enemies, or more accurately, new enemy behaviours, Capcom has just teased something quite exciting. Oh, and the reveal trailer did feature Hunk, so that’s new to the remake, too.
“Zombies of Rockfort Island,” tweeted the official Resident Evil account. “Prisoners and guards who have been infected with the T-Virus. They tend to move in hordes, unlike the more isolated zombies seen during the Raccoon City Incident.”
In previous Resident Evil games, while zombies and other infected creatures can attack in large groups, the word “horde” never really sprang to mind. The definition of a horde is large, unorganised and overwhelming humans or creatures. Can you imagine being chased by a horde of 20-plus zombies? It already has me scared!
Capcom never teased anything else about the new zombie behaviours, but the reason why we might see large zombie hordes in the Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake and not in the most recent Resident Evil Requiem, which is roughly a 28-year gap, could be due to the virus strain.
In the original Resident Evil, it's the T-Virus, Resident Evil 2, the T-Virus and G-Virus; and the T-Virus in Resident Evil 3. As for Resident Evil Requiem, it’s a mutation of the T-Virus.
My point being, those viruses are different to the one in Resident Evil Code: Veronica, with that being the T-Veronica Virus. So could this version of the virus explain the hordes, and is something that is being explored further in the upcoming remake? Only time will tell, but we can’t wait to find out.

“I have a feeling this is going to be the best Resident Evil yet. Genuinely cannot wait until 2027,” replied ScuffedAndroid to Capcom’s tweet.
“Oh sh**! A cool new zombie horde mechanic sounds amazing,” declared FumeGaming95.
“I hope this is true because it's so exciting to think of, but knowing my skills, I know that I’ll rage quite right in the middle of it,” predicted idklvlin.
“That makes the island even more terrifying. Isolated zombies are bad enough, but hordes in a prison setting are pure survival horror pressure,” explained Slothful_Sin.
The reveal trailer showed what looks to be a prequel segment of the game with Claire’s investigation of her brother’s whereabouts, leading her to an apartment block in Paris, France. This is a section not playable in the original. In the 2000 game, players first took control of Claire in a Rockfort Island prison cell, an island owned by Umbrella.
In the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica, there’s an awesome opening cinematic of Claire infiltrating an Umbrella facility in Paris, but rather than playing that segment, it cuts straight to the aforementioned prison cell. The Umbrella HQ in Paris is also where the Nemesis was created. So, it will be interesting to see how this new area in the remake is approached. Just in case you missed it, the Umbrella logo can be seen in the far background on a large building of the reveal trailer and in the screenshot featured in this article. This is most likely to be the infamous Umbrella HQ in Paris.
At the time of writing, the Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake does not have a confirmed release date, but we do know that it will arrive sometime in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
