The setting for the next Resident Evil game has been teased, and it’s somewhere the franchise has never been before, unbelievably.
Since its inception in 1996 on the original PlayStation, Capcom’s survival horror series, Resident Evil, has been one of the most beloved and iconic properties in the video game industry. It may even be more popular today than it ever was (and that’s saying something).
Over the years, the Resident Evil series has taken us to the claustrophobic Spencer Mansion and the RPD, as well as a decrepit, Louisiana plantation in the United States. We’ve explored offshore prison and military compounds in the South Pacific Ocean. We’ve ventured into gothic castles in Eastern Europe, as well as being chased by villagers in rural Spain.
We’ve been to so many memorable locations across the world in Resident Evil that it’s quite baffling that the series has never taken us to Japan. Bearing in mind that Capcom is a Japanese company. Thankfully, however, that may be about to change in a future entry of its survival horror series.
As reported by Automaton (via Futaman), Resident Evil Requiem’s producer, Masato Kumazawa, was asked about the chances of the series one day being set in the Land of the Rising Sun, and he gave a very intriguing answer.

“I think a Japanese setting is something every Japanese Resident Evil fan has thought about, and I’ve also considered it myself,” Kumazawa said. “Since the development team is primarily based in Japan, I think every member has given it some thought. While Japan hasn’t appeared as a game setting so far, it might make an appearance at some point in the future.”
Oddly, as well as never having been set in Japan, Resident Evil as a whole has few connections to the East Asian country. Perhaps two of its most prominent references are that the mega Umbrella corporation has a branch in Japan, and Yoko Suzuki, a character in Resident Evil Outbreak, is from the country. Other than that, there’s not much else.
If we were to take Masato Kumazawa's words at face value, it could be years away. By the looks of things, the prospect of Resident Evil being set in Japan has only been a fleeting conversation, but I could be wrong. I suppose it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Resident Evil 10 could be set in Japan, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
The most recent game in the series is Resident Evil Requiem, released in February this year, scoring a perfect 10/10 on GAMINGbible.
“As a horror game in its own right, Resident Evil Requiem is a very solid nine out of ten, but as a passionate fan of the series, it earns an additional bonus point thanks to the attention to detail and craft that’s gone into every pore of this game,” we said in our review.
Resident Evil Requiem is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
