Pokémon and Stardew Valley meet in our next gaming obsession

The Legend of Zelda seems to be a big influence too

An upcoming Steam title looks like an adorable mix between Pokémon and Stardew Valley, with a little bit of the OG The Legend of Zelda inspiration thrown in too.

Monsterpatch is an upcoming "cozy monster-collecting RPG" from developer SmashGames, helmed by Sean Young, that just absolutely blasted through its funding goal on Kickstarter.

Even though it still has 28 days left, the Kickstarter campaign has demolished its original £11,000 goal. It's currently sitting at just under £73,000, with over 1,600 backers.

The gameplay loop of Monsterpatch looks pretty straightforward, but in the best possible way. You explore the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past-esque continent, gather spells, and encounter different "MoNs" to add to your collection.

Side note, I have no idea what “MoN” stands for (Monster of Note, maybe?), but it’s a hilarious way of getting around copyright laws.

It seems like you’ll be getting a lot of bang for your buck too, as Monsterpatch comes packaged with two different versions (in classic Pokémon style), the “Skyfarer Version” and the “Aurora Version”.

You can actually trade any version exclusive MoNs between both versions too, which is a cute little way of giving you two distinct playthroughs.

It sounds like online/multiplayer isn’t planned at this stage though, so playing through Monsterpatch twice might be the only way to ensure you 100% complete either version.

For now, Monsterpatch is only set to come to Steam for Windows, Mac and Linux users, but it sounds like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and Nintendo Switch ports are more than a possibility.

Sean notes in the FAQ section of the Kickstarter page that they will notify backers as soon as they “get approved for any console launches”.

Plus, you won’t have to wait long to get ahold of Monsterpatch either, as Sean is “aiming to have Monsterpatch launch on Steam by the end of this year.” Here’s hoping we can get our hands on this one ASAP.
