A new post-apocalyptic extraction shooter has landed on PC storefront Steam and it’s totally free-to-play.

Developed and published by XLGAMES, The Cube, Save Us sees players face off against both mutants and raiders as they traverse an “ever-shifting” series of worlds in “brutal, close-quarters combat”.

“It was an era where a new Cold War loomed over the world, a time where the tiniest spark would have been all it took to ignite the flames of conflict,” a synopsis begins.

“Without warning, a colossal cube appeared in the sky. What followed was nothing short of catastrophe.

“Global superpowers saw it as a hostile act, and in a flash, human civilisation was consumed by nuclear fire.

“Several decades passed. When the last survivors finally mustered up the courage to resurface, the Cube that was still hovering in the sky swallowed them whole. The Cube proved to be a double-edged sword.

“Those who survived its trials claimed everything they needed to live. Most never made it back.

Now, you face one choice: Will you risk the Cube’s judgment… or die forgotten in the wasteland?”

The Cube, Save Us seemingly comprises 27 different “pieces” allowing players to enter vastly different locations every time they step through a Cube Gate.

You might, for example, go from a downtown metropolis to a pyramid, or perhaps even an amusement park.

Developers warn that “hesitation kills”, with players required to think fast. “Hoard your skills and supplies, and you won’t make it out.”

The extraction shooter formula present here will undoubtedly appeal to fans of ARC Raiders, whilst the post-apocalyptic setting has somewhat of a The Last of Us feel.

As a reminder, The Cube, Save Us is totally free-to-play and is available now on PC storefront Steam.

The Cube, Save Us Hasn’t Had The Most Successful Of Starts

Unfortunately, there is one caveat. The Cube, Save Us has been flooded with negative reviews since its launch yesterday.

At the time of writing, the title has a review tier of ‘Mostly Negative’ with many players referring to the game as boring, clunky, and pay-to-win.

“There just kind of isn't a game here. You walk around and gather items, there's a small handful of enemies you fight with a clunky combat system and that's it. There just isn't really any substance to it,” remarked one player.

“Just don't. 2/10. The characters are cool. Everything else is bad,” added another.

It’s not all bad. “The game is not as bad as people are saying. Combat is clunky, but the overall progression and concept is quite impressive, feels pretty good for a free game,” read a positive review.

The Cube, Save Us is free so there’s no harm in trying it. Perhaps just enter with very low expectations.
