Pokémon Gen 10 leaks have left fans bewildered at what Game Freak is reportedly cooking up next, especially with the starter Pokémon.
We just got Pokémon Legends: Z-A and while I personally had a lot of fun with it, I had my fair share of problems with it too. I wasn’t alone either as many fans highlighted the visuals and the lack of voice acting as big issues that need correcting in future games.
Fortunately, Pokémon Gen 10 sounds like the answer to all of our prayers, as leaks point to it being the biggest graphical upgrade we’ve seen in years, taking full advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware.
We’re not talking about that today though; we’re talking about the game’s starter Pokémon. While the ‘mon themselves haven’t leaked yet, details on how we’ll acquire them have.

Centro LEAKS reports that acquiring your starter will be a little different in the Gen 10 games as it’ll involve all three of them, plus other Pokémon, escaping from a lab and causing chaos on the streets, prompting the player to go out and catch them. I’m assuming once the three starters have been caught, that’s when you’ll decide which one to keep, though this remains to be seen.

While this is an interesting shake-up compared to previous games it also suggests that all three starters will be land-based Pokémon, and here’s why that’s interesting.
Zelda: The Wind Waker But Make It Pokémon
Gen 10 leaks have said the games will boast a large open-world separated into several islands, with players sailing between each one. Players will apparently be able to catch Pokémon on these islands but also out at sea too, with deep sea exploration also said to be an option.
If all starters can be acquired on land it suggests that all three are land-based, but if Gen 10 has a more aquatic theme surely the Water-type starter would be some sort of fish or other ocean creature.
This has fans wondering if the starters are going to be the traditional types of Fire, Grass and Water, and if for the first time in the series’ history, we’ll actually get something else.
Perhaps this time it’ll be Grass, Rock, Flying as the starters, though that doesn’t have quite the same synergy as the previous line-up.
All of this is mere speculation, of course, but it’s the Pokémon franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2026, so we’re bound to get some tasty reveals then, hopefully something on the Gen 10 games.
