Choosing your Pokémon Winds And Waves starter has been made incredibly simple thanks to their evolution types leaking ahead of time.
Pokémon Winds And Waves launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027 and will be the most advanced game in the franchise yet.
At the time of writing we’ve actually seen very little gameplay, but what we have seen looks like a major step-up from Pokémon Scarlet And Violet and Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
The starter Pokémon available in Pokémon Winds And Waves are the Grass-type Browt, the Fire-type Pombon, and finally the Water-type Gecqua.
All of these ‘mon are adorable in their own right, but the fans have taken a particular liking to Browt for their funny facial expressions. What an angry bird…

Their fondness is well-founded for another reason though; Browt will be a very strong addition to your team.
CentroLeaks shared one of the latest rumours surrounding the new starters, their evolutionary typing.
Apparently Browt will evolve into a Grass/Ground-type, Pombon a Fire/Fairy-type and Gecqua a Water/Psychic-type.

Images of the Pokémon in their evolved forms haven’t been found, and like some of the rumours we’ve been hearing about the game’s plot you should definitely take it with a pinch of salt.

Should it be true though it’ll mean Browt is certainly a starter worth considering, because usually Grass-types have a weakness to Ground-types. If Browt’s evolved form is a hybrid of both it’ll negate that prior weakness, and perhaps make you immune to Electric-type attacks too.
Pombon and Gecqua’s evolutions also sound like a decent choice, and ultimately most players will probably make their selection based on vibes or cuteness rather than meta-chasing.
When starter Pokémon evolve it’s never their new types that get the fans’ goats, it’s the design. Too many ‘mon have gone from quadrupedal creatures to bipedal and it always makes people update. If the same is said of Pombon in 2027 there’ll be riots in the streets.
We’re still waiting on more gameplay, but so far Pokémon Winds And Waves looks exceptional.
The game’s open-world will be made up of several islands, and between them a vast and azure ocean.
Players will set sail and do a bit of island-hopping, but they’ll also get to dive below the waves and interact with the sea-life that lives near the ocean floor.
Visually speaking it looks quite striking, but the real test will be performance. The Nintendo Switch 2 fixed Pokémon Scarlet And Violet’s technical drawbacks however and Pokémon Legends: Z-A ran best on the latest system. With Pokémon Winds And Waves being another game made exclusively for Nintendo’s new-gen hardware it should be optimised accordingly.
Pokémon Winds And Waves doesn’t currently have a release date, but as long as there are no delays it should launch sometime in 2027.
