In case you missed it, Sony announced a brand new free-to-join loyalty programme just a few weeks ago. PlayStation Stars will essentially allow players to earn rewards for gaming. That’s it. There is no catch.
PlayStation users will simply have to complete “campaigns and activities” to earn these rewards, and some activities are as easy as loading up a game. PlayStation Stars is set to launch later this year but until then, PlayStation’s latest acquisition could reveal more about exactly what kinds of freebies users will be getting their hands on.

Sony recently acquired Repeat.gg, a popular esports platform which is best known for hosting online tournaments. Those who compete in Repeat.gg’s tournaments can win coins, which can then be traded in for gift cards redeemable at stores like Amazon, G2A, and the PS Store. When the acquisition was first announced, it looked like Sony was looking to expand its esports horizons, but Repeat.gg could in fact simply be the new team behind PlayStation Stars.

Think about it. The play-to-win concepts are extremely similar, as are the prizes. Now that PlayStation have acquired Repeat.gg, it’s highly unlikely that the company will still provide Amazon or G2A gift cards to winners. This could mean more freebies for PlayStation gamers, as it stands to reason that Repeat.gg will be providing the PlayStation Star rewards.
As PlayStation previously outlined, “All PlayStation Stars members will have opportunities to earn loyalty points. Points can be redeemed in a catalog that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products. As an additional benefit, PlayStation Plus members enrolled in PlayStation Stars automatically earn points for purchases on PlayStation Store.” We’ll be keeping an eye out for the full rolling out of this project but the bottom line is, freebies are coming. That’s a definite win.
