PlayStation quietly confirms major acquisition that Xbox gamers aren't gonna love

The final nail just got driven into the FromSoftware coffin

The rumour is no longer a rumour, so I hope you Xbox folks aren’t fans of soulslikes.

Yeah, you can probably figure out where I’m going with this already, as Sony has officially confirmed their interest in buying Elden Ring and Dark Souls developer FromSoftware’s parent company Kadokawa Corporation.

Obviously they also made Bloodborne but, well, you Xbox owners were never getting that one anyway.

In case you need a quick refresher, we’ve been hearing a lot of chatter regarding Sony’s purchase of Kadokawa Corporation since the end of last month.

Kadokawa are primarily in the anime and manga publishing side of things (as they own several huge Japanese publishers such as Yen Press, ASCII Media Works and Enterbrain), but they do also happen to own a little video game developer you might have heard of called FromSoftware.

To be fair, we did basically have confirmation of this a long time ago - but said confirmation came from Kadokawa, not Sony.

ICYMI: FromSoft revealed Elden Ring: Nightreign yesterday.

Back when the story first broke, Sony actually declined to comment on the acquisition following a statement from Kadokawa’s CEO Takeshi Natsuno that they had received a “letter of intent to acquire the company's shares” from Sony.

It seems Sony is sick of being badgered about it however, as they finally confirmed their plans to purchase the company in a statement to Yahoo Japan.

"It's true that we have made an initial statement of intent. We would appreciate it if we could refrain from further comment,” a Sony representative revealed to Yahoo Japan.

According to a few of Kadokawa’s employees, it actually turns out that Kadokawa approached Sony and asked them to purchase the company instead of the other way around (like many assumed).

This is extra bad news for Xbox owners. If Kadokawa actively wants to be purchased by Sony, the whole situation is more of a when rather than an if at this point.

Hey, at least they announced that new Elden Ring game before everything was finalised, so you’ll assumedly still get that one on Xbox.

Might wanna savour it though, because I’d be surprised if Elden Ring 2 or Dark Souls 4 ever come your way once Sony owns FromSoftware.
